What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a small screw-shaped structure, usually made of titanium, which is placed in your upper or lower jaw by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to replace the root of a natural tooth. An implant is designed to be perfectly compatible with the bone structure of the mandible (lower jaw) or maxilla (upper jaw), so that the bone will grow around the implant and contribute to a strong, stable jaw and dental structure.

Once a dental implant is installed, the jawbone begins a healing process called osseointegration. As the bone heals, it bonds tightly to the surface of the implant, forming a solid base for the artificial tooth that will be attached to it. This process is essential, as it creates a stable connection between implant and bone, which enables the artificial tooth to effectively withstand the repeated pressure of chewing.

Advantages of dental implants

Dental implants are not always the best solution. It depends on the situation, but implants offer many advantages:

  • Close resemblance to natural teeth
  • Excellent durability in comparison with other dental prostheses
  • Inserted directly into the jaw for greater strength
  • Help avoid the problems associated with missing teeth
  • Increase self-confidence and quality of life

If you need to replace one or more teeth, dental implants may be the right solution for you. Feel free to contact our South Shore clinic for a consultation so we can discuss possible treatments for your unique situation.

How dental implant installation works

At your first appointment, your surgeon will perform an initial examination and take a 3D X-ray of your oral cavity. After this complete evaluation, you’ll discuss your treatment options together. Here’s how dental implant installation works:

During surgery, the titanium implant is inserted into the jawbone under local anaesthetic. A healing period of several months is then required to allow the implant to integrate with the bone (osseointegration). Once this stage is complete, the implantologist can attach your dental crown to fill the gap left by your missing tooth. Regular follow-up visits will be scheduled to confirm that the implant has integrated fully, and the crown is functioning correctly. It’s important to maintain good dental hygiene to keep your implant in good condition over the long term.
