The difference between traditional (2D) radiology and 3D CBCT imaging lies mainly in the type of beam used. 2D radiography used a triangular fan-shaped beam, allowing only a single slice along one axis—one image—of the analyzed region. CBCT, on the other hand, uses a cone-shaped X-ray beam to obtain a volume of the analyzed region, from which images along the three spatial axes can be extracted.
