Everything you need to know about wisdom teeth
Once used by our ancestors to chew plants and raw meat, wisdom teeth have lost their usefulness over the course of human evolution. A smaller jaw and changes in our eating habits have turned these teeth into relics of the past—yet they can still cause very modern problems.
Wisdom teeth: when and why to take action?
Third molars located at the back of the dental arch, wisdom teeth appear later than the other teeth in the mouth.
They usually come in around age 18, but they can also erupt later.
As they erupt, they can cause significant pain and lead to various oral conditions. If wisdom teeth don’t have enough space or are misaligned, they may remain fully or partially covered by the gum and jawbone, which can eventually lead to several issues. In these situations, a dental extraction is necessary to control the problem and prevent more serious oral diseases.
Risks and complications: it all depends on impaction
Not all wisdom teeth require surgery or removal. Some will come in without any issues and won’t affect the jaw or adjacent teeth. However, it’s recommended to pay close attention to them, as their position at the back of the mouth makes them harder to clean, which increases the risk of cavities and potentially infections.
When does wisdom teeth removal become necessary?
Wisdom teeth tend to cause complications and require removal when they are impacted (completely covered by the gum) or partially impacted. When they are partially impacted—meaning part of the tooth remains under the gum—the risk of infection from bacteria and trapped food debris increases significantly.
Wisdom teeth surgery and removal
It is best to remove wisdom teeth before problems arise—most often during adolescence. To avoid an emergency procedure, we strongly recommend checkups with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon.
At MFML Clinic, the evaluation is performed by our specialists who, through an appropriate clinical exam and a panoramic or 3D jaw X-ray, will determine whether removal is required.
Our expertise and our intravenous sedation technique—different from general anesthesia—allow us to offer our patients a gentle wisdom teeth removal for maximum comfort. For more information about the procedure and advice on what to do after the operation, please consult our instructions page.
