What is intravenous sedation?<\/h2>\n

\n

Intravenous sedation is a procedure that involves reducing the stress and discomfort a patient may experience during surgery by administering sedatives through a vein. It promotes relaxation and facilitates surgical procedures, such as dental implant placement or wisdom tooth extraction. <\/p>\n

In addition to reducing anxiety, the sedatives we use cause drowsiness and amnesia.<\/p>\n<\/div>

Without being completely asleep, you will be semi-conscious and able to respond to certain simple instructions. However, sedation should not be confused with general anesthesia. Sedation is a relaxant that allows you to be more relaxed, while general anesthesia is equivalent to putting you completely to sleep. Local anesthesia will be administered jointly after the administration of an oral or intravenous sedative. However, there is no need to worry; patients under sedation do not realize it. <\/p>\n<\/div> <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

Procedure<\/h2>\n

First and foremost, our surgeons are trained to practice intravenous sedation safely, thanks to their medical training and knowledge. There is therefore no danger in requesting it. Please note, however, that you will need to follow specific instructions to maximize your comfort during the procedure. <\/p>\n<\/div>

You will be asked to fast\u2014no eating or drinking\u2014for at least 6 hours before your appointment. If you have medication to take beforehand, it can be taken with a small amount of water to help with swallowing. You must also be accompanied by a responsible adult, dress comfortably, and prioritize a short-sleeved shirt or blouse. <\/p>\n<\/div> <\/div>\n <\/div>\n

Contraindications<\/h2>\n

Intravenous sedation is suitable for the majority of our patients. However, there are certain situations where it is contraindicated. Among others, pregnancy, an allergy to one of the medications used, and certain medical conditions are all factors that contraindicate the administration of a sedative. This is why providing a complete and up-to-date medical questionnaire is essential. <\/p>\n<\/div> <\/div>\n

General anesthesia<\/h2>\n

It is also important to know that in certain situations, general anesthesia will prove to be a better treatment option than oral or intravenous sedation. Whether for medical reasons, in cases of severe anxiety and behavioral disorders, or because the required maxillofacial surgery is complex, general anesthesia will then be preferred.
